Alberniweather now sees the Earthquakes! Plus Weather Change – Social Moving – Go Canada!
Big News! Alberniweather Earthquake Sensor online!
If you’ve come to the front page recently you will have seen a new addition that looks like this!
Actually, in real life, it looks like this!
What you see is a tiny computer that has a geophone attached to it giving it the ability to sense earthquakes literally all over the world!!
Surely not all over the world… you say… well actually, yes! This just boggles my mind!
That’s the display of the RaspberryShake network of sensors. They detected an earthquake in Ankara turkey, and thanks to the precise location and timing provided by the huge network, that shaking could be pinpointed, and viewed, on my station at Alberniweather, 9,931km away!
Totally incredible technology. Once I get more familiar with the sensors and the ways I can display the data you’ll probably see more integration into the Alberniweather website. For now, you can click on the link on the front page to go to the map and see the earthquakes there.
We detected our first locally felt quake last night! I had a reader contact me on socialbc.ca to say they felt it near Victoria and went to my site and saw it pop up live on the screen! So cool! Click the image below to go to the map!
Podcast is up!
The podcast accompanying this post is up! You can see it below. Lots to check out!
Weather change on the way – Beware of Freezing Rain!
The dry and clear pattern of the past week or two will break down Friday night. We should see clouds rolling in on Friday night and Saturday morning and rain should begin on the West Coast before 7AM Saturday.
Temperatures will remain near freezing Saturday morning so not only is there a chance of snow, but also until the ground thaws, there could be freezing rain on Saturday and Sunday.
I would expect everything to thaw out by Monday. A second rainy and windy system will come in on Tuesday night.
If there is any lingering snow or ice from the weekend, the Tuesday/Wednesday event should take care of it. We should have temperatures up at 8-9ºC.
Synopsis: La Niña conditions are expected to persist in the near-term, with a transition to ENSO-neutral likely during March-May 2025 (66% chance).
The La Niña this year was weak, so we didn’t see huge impacts on our weather patterns, though it might have contributed to the low-precipitation in January and the slightly cooler temperatures, but the expectation for a few months now would be that this La Niña would end in the spring. That prediction has held. It’s too early to say whether we will shift into an El Niño pattern in time for summer or fall 2025 or not.
Join SocialBC.ca!
I’ve been working on a new project with some folks around BC. It’s called “SocialBC” and it’s a Twitter/X Alternative that is built and controlled in British Columbia meant to encourage communities in BC to communicate and share news and information.
If you’re looking for a Canadian alternative to X, then SocialBC could be it. It is connected to millions of people on the Mastodon and Fediverse network of social media sites all around the world so there is no lack of interesting content and discussion.
Alberniweather is there of course. The feed you see on the front page is from socialbc.ca.
That’s it for today!
Oh, and …. we’ll always miss you Philippine Mars… and Go Canada!! :+)
