June 2023 Summary – Fiery Dry

Alberniweather and Port Alberni Summary for June 2023

Story of the Month – Cameron Lake Bluffs Fire

The biggest story of course was the Cameron Lake Wildfire. For the first time since the 1970s there was a very on the shores of Cameron Lake.  It closed Highway 4 and that highway remains under threat of rockslide and tree fall. We can expect this to be an ongoing problem in the fall and winter as rain and snow puts more of the debris in jeopardy of falling and weakens the rock face itself.

We got off to a surprisingly cool start in June and the Airport set a few daily low temperature records but none were all time records. We also set a few high temperatures but none all-time. Overall, the month was above average for high and average temperatures but lower than average for minimum temperatures.

We have some missing data this month. The Airport is missing data from June 26 and Robertson Creek has not reported any data since June 14.

We only had a few days that could be considered “June-uary” and it was barely that. Overall our rainfall for the month was below average and continues the drought that began in May.

El Niño is here. This might make for a warmer summer, but it is more likely that it will impact the fall and winter seasons with more precipitation and warmer temperatures. It might be a difficult winter for the ski resorts, and the potential for extreme events remains high.

That’s all for this month. Enjoy the stats and graphs below!

Airport Daily Records Set this Month

Set at Airport* since 1994 and compared to Valley stations** for all time.
(since 1895 for rain, 1900 for temperatures, 1980 for snow on ground)

We set multiple heat records. The Airport set 6 new daily records in total including tying the historic all time high on May 14 and beating the historic all time high on May 15. However, the Airport was second to Robertson Creek station on the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 17th as Robertson set All Time records for the area.

** Short Term means since 1994 at the new AVRA Airport. Airport Records are compared to the 30+ year weather stations of record since 1900 (1895 for rain) at Beaver Creek, Port Alberni “City” and Robertson Creek.  Note that records pre 1950 may be more likely to over-estimate high temperatures.
