Solstice Lunar Eclipse tonight

UPDATE – The Lunar Eclipse is starting! (can’t you tell? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ):

In case (haha! always the optimist ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) the weather doesn’t clear, here are some webcams where you can be sure to see the first Winter Solstice Eclipse in 300 years!

Nicest one I’ve found (but chat is full):

Chile:

California:

A truly amazingly rare combination of events may occur today.

Rare thing #1: There is a total lunar eclipse tonight starting around 9PM with “totality” at just past midnight.

Rare thing #2: It’s on the Solstice (Happy First day of Winter!)

Rare thing #3: We may be able to see it in the breaks in the clouds… in December, in Port Alberni!

Rare thing #4: There is a possibility, just maybe, that we could have a little snow on the ground. So that we could have “the red moon on the crest of the new fallen snow”

It could happen. One thing is for sure though, the Lunar Eclipse will happen no matter what. The eclipse turns the moon red why? Because it is reflecting every sunrise and sunset on Earth. Now that would be a sight to see!

Weather: Possible snow today, if this darn warmish wind goes away! Then, yes, rain.

Very cool. But it sure sounds breezy out there!

It was quite a persistent breeze when I got in the car this morning.

It was snowing very lightly in the Cathedral Grove to Coombs area. Rain after that.

Mark Madryga on CKNW just singled out “the Port Alberni area” as having the possibility for 10cm of snow today. Not often we get a mention on the Vancouver station. ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t see it happening though if this wind keeps up.

Snowing in Sutton Pass at 6 am today. Take it real easy if you are driving to or from the West coast…

Seems since EC forgot about us and we got all that snow a bunch of Mondays ago, they have been very trigger happy to say we’re gonna get snow and we don’t. Perhaps they need to be read the story about the Boy who cried Wolf too many times again.

I think you’re right Nick. Though really I think they’re over estimating pretty much everywhere. It’s just too warm out.

Once bitten, twice shy. EC is overestimating so they don’t get caught with their pants down like last time. At work we like to gauge how many bonuses the forecasters get by the number of separate warnings/updates/changes/etc we get shortly before or after the scheduled weather updates.

I’m surprised they stuck with the 5-10cm in their 11AM update. It just doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

DriveBC is now reporting compact snow with slippery sections in Sutton Pass, so it’s snowing *somewhere*! glad i got through the pass when it was just starting.

BTW, it appears they are installing electronic highway condition signboards on either side of Sutton Pass, like the ones on the Malahat. Hopefully a summit cam too!

If we get through this wet patch and the wind keeps blowing from the South there is a big patch of clear sky just off the coast. We might have a chance at seeing that Lunar Eclipse tonight!

I’m a little upset that we’re only 1.5 degree away from this all falling as snow!

    So close!

    Kat,

The only signs we see being installed are on either side of the Kennedy Rock Face where the ambulance went over the edge. Not sure why exactly those signs are in those spots – I think the eastbnd sign could’ve gone at the junction and the westbnd sign somewhere around West Bay.

And, yes, they are installing a cam on Sutton’s Pass. The cam is already there. It’s supposed to be online in January I think. And I think another cam is going in where the westbnd sign is as well.
