Well it’s official. We have our first Snow Day of 2011! Both Vancouver Island University and SD70 are closed. Nanaimo SD is closed as well according to CKNW.
It is currently sleeting and/or raining. So this snow is going to get very heavy very quickly. I wouldn’t shovel it unless you absolutely have to. What I would do is make sure all the drains are clear so that the water has somewhere to go. It is going to rain today and then should get very warm, up to 7C, today or tonight and the melt will set it.
So if you can, get out there and enjoy it while it’s there!
You can see a Timelapse of the Snowfall on the alberniweather youtube channel
or a better version here if you have Quicktime.

Weird how it has switched over to rain but the temperature is still the same
Ya it must be very warm aloft. It’s 8C in Tofino right now so that’s probably an indication of how warm it is upstairs ๐ Better get out there while we can!
Anyone know if the hump is closed or open???
drivebc says it’s open but visibility is limited and heavy snowfall.
I would not drive unless it is an emergency
Chris..you predicted the “wednesday” snow day along time ago…and we are very excited!!
Roads are great! Buses are running and parking lots are cleared……Great job, considering….
Power just came on here in North Port! We only got about 8″-9″ here, but boy is it wet stuff! Mark Madryga just said they’re getting 35cm+ in areas of the Fraser Valley.
Any recent comments about the hump? Supposed to drive to Victoria from the coast for doc appt. today but can’t get a clear idea of the pass or the hump…
Limited visibility, slushy slippery and apparently still snowing over the hump. drivebc.ca
Nice video Chris!
Hey Chris, there is low after low after low coming at us!!!!!!!Any future-casts?
I think the future-cast is uncertain right now. It was WET but now it’s not… gimme a day or so ๐
Wow, Chris is at a loss for words. I’m gonna go way out on a limb and say it’s going to be WET again, then dry out and get colder early next week, then get WET and warm up a bit again.
The forecast actually isn’t nearly as bad as it was. THe next system that is on its way is going to give us persistent rain but not torrential. So Hopefully the flooding from the snow won’t be too bad.
I see now the wind has picked up big time from the South. It’s 6C and the snow is melting fast on the rain gauge!
Funny, my all time record rain-rate (80mm/hr or something crazy) was set in January 2007 from a Snow-Rain event. Maybe we’ll get another shot at it today!
Awesome video Chris! Quite neat to watch the tree limbs droop under the weight of the snow. Anyway, our snowfall last night looked to be about 2 inches all told. It was gone by early this morning *sob*.
Hey, they issued a new forecast for us at 6:15 tonight!
That’s quite the forecast!
It has quite a ways to go to get down to zero! But I wouldn’t complain about another 10cm ๐
It is -o.6 on my weather station and the snow has quickly turned to ice. Thick fog so I can’t even tell if it’s cloudy.
Well speak for yourself, but I wouldn’t be heartbroken if it just rained tonight. One snow day per month is enough for me.(both kids and work today)
Wow Eve. Hard to believe there’s 4C difference between you and me! You must have a cold wind blowin’ out there! ๐
(And not saying at all that I don’t believe you ๐ Weather is amazing)
Chris: True enough I had a dual-snow day as well. I’m ready to go back!
Yeah that forecast snuck out of nowhere, but I drove up Falls Road around 5:00 pm and slid on some ice on the road. The snow up there was already crusted over too.
I see they issued an updated forecast at 6:13 this evening calling for 5 to 10cm more snow.
Any takers?
Possible… but probable?
I give it a 60/40 chance with 60 being rain.
