Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall and Equinox

Ever wonder when “Fall” really starts? Most of us know that the seasons change somewhere around the 20th of December, March, June and September but it does fluctuate and it can actually be anywhere from the 19th to the 22nd of the month (in our timezone).

This is because the orbit of the Earth itself isn’t perfect and the tilt of the Earth, fluctuates in orientation to the Sun.

Luckily, Wikipedia has a handy table showing the equinox and solstice dates and times for the Earth. You can see it here.

The Fall 2010 equinox, will happen at 3:08AM on Sept 23rd Universal Time. Subtract 7 hours for us here and that makes the Equinox, and the start of Fall at 8:08PM tonight the 22nd.

So do enjoy what should be a very nice final day of summer. Then as you feast tonight, hopefully on the bounty of your garden, or someone elses, say hello to Fall.

In case you’re wondering, the winter solstice will happen on December 21st this year, at 4:38PM…. I wonder if we’ll have snow….

Oh, and the rain forecast has tapered off a little. No big monsoon this weekend, but still pretty wet.

I’ve been watching this storm cell – hoping it would keep coming our way… but we are the only ones without a wind warning! Time to make a trip to tofino!!!

I find it interesting that your station has wind at almost 40 km/h but the weather station has been calm since 3 pm yesterday. It is windy all around the valley, do you think there might be something wrong with the wind gauge at the airport?

There could be, but more likely is just that the Airport is not in the right spot. It could be protected being up on the hill beside the lake there. The only way to find out would be to go out there! 🙂

    Any volunteers?

I live out near the airport – hasn’t been much wind here at all, but was pretty good in town!

Ya I think the airport is a terrible place to measure wind here. It was far better when EC had their station at the old airport across the river. That was an accurate place for Port Alberni the current airport gets no wind, gets more rain, gets colder in the winter and likely hotter in the summer.
