Alberniweather and Port Alberni Summary for October 2023
Story of the Month – Extremely Normal Rain
After months of drought, October 2023 registered a perfectly normal amount of rain. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make up for the previous months of drought, but it’s a good sign and likely a sign of an El Niño influenced fall and winter to come.
A new Webcam
There really wasn’t much more happening this month. Aside from the slightly early start to the cold and slushy weather, we didn’t have any major records broken this month. The Airport only set 2 new records, both for low temperatures, but neither came anywhere near an all time low. I did get the new webcam installed and am continuing to work out the bugs there. It’s slowly coming around.
Edit December 6, 2023: Hey! I just got the monthly timelapses going. Below is the October one. It’s a little incomplete in terms of days as I was working out the bugs, but also has some fun footage of the setup of the camera. There is a raccoon!
Ocean Conditions – Nearby Cold patch in a World of Heat
The current image of the Ocean from October 31st is pretty stunning. Huge regions of the world’s oceans are above normal temperatures. There is one small pocket just off of Vancouver Island and the Northwest US in blue that is cooler than normal. This might at least tamp down the intensity of some storms but there is a ton of very hot water off of Japan.
The El Niño area off of the coast of South America is looking very impressive. That is going to be adding a lot of energy into the Pacific and entire world atmosphere.
That’s all I have for today. Enjoy the stats below!
Airport Daily Records Set this Month

** Short Term means since 1994 at the new AVRA Airport. Airport Records are compared to the 30+ year weather stations of record since 1900 (1895 for rain) at Beaver Creek, Port Alberni “City” and Robertson Creek. Note that records pre 1950 may be more likely to over-estimate high temperatures.
