I’ve never seen this for Port Alberni.
It has been issued for our section of the Island only, the Snowfall warning remains for other sections.
Bolded below is the likely reason for the warning.
What is a Winter Storm Warning
When 25 cm of snow or more is expected to fall within 24 hours,
OR
Two or more winter weather warning elements (as listed above) are expected to approach or exceed the criteria. For instance, if 10-15 cm of snow is expected to be accompanied by 2 or more hours of freezing rain.

It’s looking more like sleet than snow at the moment in the downtown area. I think the bulk of the precipitation is yet to come, but what form will it take?
They just changed the warning again!
Whoa! hang on kids.
I think its going to snow all day and throughout the night, i think the cold air will stick around in a valley for a bit longer.
Chris,
Thanks for your updates…you are the source for my weather forecasts. Your analysis and frequent updating are greatly appreciated!
Chris, do you see the snow continuing throughout the night?
It’s sure not letting up. I don’t know if it’s going to keep snowing all night. I would think not only because there should be a big push of warm air come in with the rain, but if we haven’t gotten above freezing by then at least then who knows. Maybe it just won’t get warm enough to turn completely to snow.
It’s definitely coming down now!
TD: You’re welcome! 🙂
Sure wish that Hump Cam was online!
The 2:00 EC forecast is still calling for a warm-up to plus 5C overnight, but I’m sure it’ll get plenty messy before that.
OK everyone keeps talking about the power going out……….did I miss WIND forecasted, only saw gusty winds? Are we also having a wind event Chris? Someone?
The worries of power outage comes from the possibility of freezing rain on power lines ala Quebec a few years back.
I don’t think we’ll be getting that as the air is warming up… but the possibilty exists I guess.
We should get a little bit of wind, but not enough for any damage.
not a wind event, but freezing rain can bring down powerlines due to overloading the weight capacity of the lines.
Thanks Guys! It is definitely freezing rain pellets out Beaver Creek on the river
its sure cold enough to snow out -1 but it just wont come down in snowflakes! “sad face”
